Synopsis
Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire, has survived, even though her home has been destroyed. Gale has escaped. Katniss's family is safe. Peeta has been captured by the Capitol. District 13 really does exist. There are rebels. There are new leaders. A revolution is unfolding.
It is by design that Katniss was rescued from the arena in the cruel and haunting Quarter Quell, and it is by design that she has long been part of the revolution without knowing it. District 13 has come out of the shadows and is plotting to overthrow the Capitol. Everyone, it seems, has had a hand in the carefully laid plans - except Katniss.
The success of the rebellion hinges on Katniss's willingness to be a pawn, to accept responsibility for countless lives, and to change the course of the future of Panem. To do this, she must put aside her feelings of anger and distrust. She must become the rebel's Mockingjay - no matter what the personal cost.
Characters
Katniss Everdeen : The main character in the novel. This essay zooms in the time when Katniss's younger sister, Primrose Everdeen, died while saving the wounded children. After her death, she could not talk for a long time until she meets President Snow, telling her that it was not the Capitol which dropped the bombs that killed her sister. Thereafter, she tries to talk about it to Haymitch, but to no avail.
Haymitch Abernathy : Katniss Everdeen's mentor for the Hunger Games, usually anything but sober.
Gale Hawthorne : Katniss's best friend and hunting partner. After the rebels won, he was usually the one in charge of things. They met in a forest while hunting for wild animals and trading them at the black market called the Hob, which burnt down during the explosions.
Plutarch Heavensbee : Briefly mentioned in paragraph five. He is currently Head Gamemaker for the games.
Cinna : Mentioned in paragraph ten as Cinna's Mockingjay suit. He was Katniss's stylist. He designs the suits Katniss will wear for the Hunger Games. Around six months before the Quarter Quell, the Seventy-fifth Hunger Games began, he made the Mockingjay suit for Katniss if she ever agrees to be the rebel's face, the Mockingjay. He was tortured in front of Katniss then killed shortly after.
Prep team : Mentioned in paragraph ten and eleven. Comprises of three members, Flavius, Octavia and Venia. They work under Cinna and prepare Katniss for the cameras.
President Coriolanus Snow : The main antagonist for this series, he was the ruler of the Capitol and all of Panem, until the rebels took over.
President Alma Coin : Hated by Katniss because of her ruthlessness and her obsession with being the ruler. Katniss is also enraged that Coin would kill Capitol children, and even more upset that one of the murdered children was her sister, Primrose Everdeen, who was trying to save the wounded children when the second set of bombs went off.
